The Process
SEction 01

We’re excited to celebrate creativity and share our journey with you Popheadz is an artist-led project with a special focus on high-caliber work & design. The goal of this collection was to set a new bar for PFP art & design. We value storytelling and hope that Popheadz sets the new bar and standard for what PFP projects can be. Our history is in Motion Deisgn, Ad biz, Illustration, TV Animation, and many other media industries. Our future is in Neo-Seoul.

the Origin Story

A team, from the beginning

We started with four unique 1/1 auctions on FormFunction, TIGER, WOLF, RABBIT, and FALCON. These 1/1s received such a warm welcome by the community that we decided to make a full collection. We finalized the 12 OG POPHEADZ 1/1 pieces and set forth into building a PFP collection.

The Process

We celebrate identity, patch together parts and recreate your true self in the midst of the crowd that is unchanging. Be like the reckless and liberated teenager that is fearless against the odds and hardships of the world. The character design is inspired by early 2000s throwbacks from pop culture, anime, and fashion in order to capture that specific nostalgia while also redefining into a new and fresh visual and digital entertainment brand.

About NEO-Seoul
SEction 01

A futuristic and technology advanced city that is robust with hopes and dreams, one would say it’s a city that is limitless. After recovering from a significant economic fallout, the city rejuvenated back to life stronger than ever and has since established itself as one of the top hubs for trade and entertainment.

The trifecta

The SKY ACADEMY’S top 3 elite guilds that help keep the foundation of the city, also known as The Trifecta Guild, was established with the goal of securing an alliance and support to the community. The three guilds are The House of Saber: The Terrestrials, The House of Kindred: The Avians, And lastly The House of Yell: The Aquatics. Holders and non-holders will get to choose which guild they mostly resonate with.

The Process

The prototype bomb, known as the “BOMBZ” was specially engineered to self destruct and uncover a surprising yet a fun chaotic explosion. Metaphorically meant to represent a call for action and to liberate yourself from the restraints that hold us down. The BOMBZ can also be implemented in the extended world of Neo-Seoul

Hoverboards, Jetpacks, & Joyrides

Neo-Seoul has an immense amount of advanced technology.
Early concepts of vehicles are introduced to enhance mobility for POPPERZ. From Hoverboards, Jetpacks, Scooters, and many more that are powered by electromagnetic technology that is only developed in NEO-SEOUL. Designs are fully customizable and transformable.

A group of kids who are reckless but also persistent and ambitious in getting what they want but also courageous. While it does seem like they are careless, they still have the duty to protect the city from mysterious opposing forces that disrupt the peace of the city. Do they have what it takes?

Figuring out the best method of generating the right traits combination was a challenge since we wanted to avoid any “skittle” like assortments that would be unappealing to the eyes. So we sampled a few experiments with the OG POPHEADZ to test out what was working and what was not working in terms of quality, quantity, and design with the given traits for us to work with. We wanted to quickly find and execute the problem in order to transition and work with a bigger batch and calculate how many different variations would appear.

After we’ve figured out and had our stats established, we began to sketch countless traits per each category. During this phase, we had to be mindful of design and see that all the heads were cohesively visually appealing even without color. In additions, establishing the boy and girl head had to be designed in a way that could be androgynous so that any type of traits that we designed could fit without imposing a gender specific design that makes it look more “feminine” or “masculine” but neutral yet appealing and effective. Expressions were also something that we had to be thoughtful about in order to avoid making too dynamic mouth shapes or expressions that just didn’t look normal. We wanted to emphasize a more natural expression that didn’t feel so soulless or dead. 

Variations, Trial, & Error

Some trial and errors that we faced were the limited space and scale that we had to work within the safe zone circle of the pfp. Many designs had to be limited but still appealing in order for these pfps to still look good from far away when it’s actually seen as a profile icon. We had to be mindful of shape design so that the silhouette of the head can be easily noticeable along with its facial features. And because these were just heads without any type of shoulder length section, design choices always had to be revised constantly since the heads would be the only focus. 

Building the Style Guide

A tool for collaboration

When we first started designing and tried to get used to the style of POPHEADZ, a technical style guide was provided to inform how the process of the head was created. Fairly simple approach of sketch/line, flat colors, and then rendering.

But as you can see, some of the design and features of the OG POPHEADZ compared to the 10K collection were slightly altered in order to simplify the shape design and emphasize features that needed to be better shown such as the eye and the overall top helm. Other than that, a lot of design sentiments from the OG POPHEADZ predecessors were still visually translated and used as a blueprint for collaborations but not limited.

Formerly apathetic youths are able to teleport In a concept story, unreleased, we imagined that apathetic youths are able to teleport to a separate / parallel world where they are able to find freedom, expression, and rebel against societal norms. It isn’t necessarily about complete anarchy, it’s more about a celebration of youth and optimism.

Animation FX were an important key to bring life to the heads. We wanted to make sure these animations could be simple but also visually pleasing without it actually distracting the overall composition of the head. Thankfully because the style of animation and the style of the illustration was very similar, there were no visual problems.

Primary Considerations

However one of the main things that we had to consider was how these animations would loop and how the animations interacted with the head. We faced technical issues in regards to how the animations would be layered and clipped. From banding to layering issues the amount of QA that was required to create the collection of animated NFTs is virtually unheard of.
Between roughing out each frame by hand and balancing quality vs file size, the team pushed gif compression to its very limits…bringing out the best of the collection.
